The Calendar not only tracks the date but also allows you to search for events.Use the edit dropdown to select "search for events". You can then enter a search term, try holidays, a sports team, etc. You will be returned a set of search results and you will be able to select a result and have those events added to your calendar. You can also completely customize the appearance of the widget by clicking on the color picker icon to change the background color, the background border to be square or rounded, add a transparency level and even add a custom background image.
